Abstract

"Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Monitoring and Evaluation Manual: A Technical Reference" is a research output of the Introduction of Technologies on Characteristic Analysis and Conservation Management in Agricultural Heritage Systems project, a partnership between the Rural Development Administration (RDA) of the Republic of Korea and the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS). The Manual aims to (1) support the management and governance of GIAHS through specific steps it can take to monitor and evaluate the actions taken for conservation, as defined by the GIAHS Action Plan; and (2) reinforce the importance and usefulness of having an M&E process as an integral part of the GIAHS Action Plan implementation. The Manual opens with an overview of the current state and need for M&E of GIAHS and explains the role played by M&E in a proposed ToC for GIAHS conservation (Chapter 1). It then lays out the purpose and core principles of M&E of GIAHS (Chapter 2), followed by a detailed explanation of the proposed criteria and indicators for monitoring GIAHS (Chapter 3). The Manual maps out a holistic, systematic process to design and implement an M&E process for GIAHS and requisite institutional structures and resources (Chapters 4 and 5). The Manual closes by linking monitoring results and evaluation, focusing on the effective use of findings (Chapter 6).
