Abstract
What does Anthony D’Costa’s book, Globalization and Economic Nationalism in Asia (2012), tell us about globalization and econo mic nationalism? The editor’s main purpose is to investigate the interactions between globalization and economic nation alism in Asian countries—an important subject, espe cially in the context of contemporary capitalism and the financial crisis that has dogged most of the advanced capitalist countries today. The book covers the following topics: Chap ter 1 presents the capitalism and economic na tion al ism in Asian countries. Chapter 2 ex plores the interplay of economic and geo pol itical nationalism and regionalism in con temporary East Asia. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 demonstrate the globalization and economic nationalism in India, China, and Japan. Chap ter 6 discusses Japan’s use of industrial policy in new emerging sectors such as innovation driven, energyefficient commercial aircraft. Chapter 7 de mon strates South Korea’s pursuit of global ization with neomercantilist strate gies. Chap ter 8 presents Singapore’s pragma t ic mercantilism in trying to cope with new challenges spurred by economic global ization. Chapter 9 gives a historical account of how China is practicing economic nationalism by promoting national brands and discouraging foreign brands. Chapter 10 dis cusses the growing nationalism in China and the re sponse of Japanese multinationals in adjusting to the Chinese economic and politi cal environ ment. Finally, Chapter 11 discusses conclud ing remarks on looking ahead at econo mic nationalism.
