Abstract

The International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), located in the dockland region of Dublin, was established in 1987. In the intervening years it has emerged as one of the most significant offshore centres in the EU and is, in certain niches, a truly global player. To take one example, nine of the top 15 reinsurance companies have located in Dublin. Well over 400 companies, including many blue-chip global multinational companies (MNCs), now employ in excess of 4000 people within the IFSC. This chapter examines the development of the IFSC against the background of the cross-border trade in financial services.
