Abstract

The Chapter is introduced by highlighting some important economic underpinnings of the global sport industry, and with a brief historic review of how sport eventually became a global industry. The chapter then considers 4 phases of globalization and the development of the sport industry is described in context of each of those phases. It is argued that sport continues to grow in importance as a platform for communication and mass engagement and that sport diplomacy is becoming an increasingly important driver of the likely ongoing globalization of sport. It is acknowledged that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the size and direction of the sport industry, cannot yet reliably be estimated. The chapter concludes with a brief exploration of what the future might hold for the global sport industry.
