Abstract

Taken together, these three volumes raise interesting questions about television formats, transnationality and media world regions. Tasha Oren's and Sharon Shahaf's collection focuses on television programme formats in terms of their production, distribution and broadcast/reception. The eighteen chapters deal with matters of theory, history and cultural adaptation, as well as four case studies about remakes of the Pop Idol programme in India, New Zealand, Africa and the USA. Elke Weissman's monograph is an excellent analysis of changing interconnections between the USA and UK since 1970 in the area of television drama. This covers seven topics: a shared US/UK cultural (especially television) history; programmes imported from one market to the other; dramatic style and performance in particular programmes; generic roots of both the US miniseries and 'American quality drama'; audience reception of crime shows; and US/UK drama coproductions.
