Abstract

Three religious demographic trends merit closer scrutiny, along with their impacton U.S. foreign policy. First, the percentage of religionists has steadily risen andis expected to reach about 87 percent by 2010. Second, the demographic profile of Christianity has shifted to Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Third, due to both immigration and secularization, the U.S. is becoming less Christian and more religiously diverse. These trends may lead to a larger role for religion in diplomatic relations, Christians improving global relations by virtue of the global reach of Christianity, and an opportunity in the U.S. for increased interaction among religionists.
