Abstract

In this paper we consider the global optimization problem of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential energy, a simplified, but still very challenging, model for the energy of a cluster of atoms. Modifications of the LJ energy are proposed which try to capture the characteristics of the global minima, thus simplifying their detection. Computational experiments reveal the positive effects of such modifications, in particular for the hardest instances.
