Abstract

In 2019, the UK was one of the largest funders of global health research. It had a government manifesto commitment to spend 0·7% of gross national income on official development assistance (ODA).1 Much of this ODA funding was channelled to enable global health research, with an aim of improving lives and livelihoods in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing new evidence for effective interventions and improving research and research capacity.2 This extra funding ensured that global health was an academic growth area.
