Abstract

Models describing global transport and fate of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are presented including 1‐D, 2‐D, and 3‐D models. They cover a wide range of complexity. Experience shows that the models with the simplest atmospheric description tend to feature the most sophisticated treatment of atmosphere/surface exchange processes. Accurate and complete information on emissions was defined as one of the most important input parameters affecting the model performance. Among various classes of POPs major emphasis has been placed to estimate emissions of PAHs, PCBs, PCDDs, and PCDFs. Major emission sources have been identified including various industrial processes, stationary fuel combustion, solid waste incineration, transportation, and various open sources. Information on the production and use of various pesticides is also becoming available. An example of global model application to study the transport of HCHs is presented.
