Abstract
The essay deals with theatre studies, and it discusses some recent volumes on history and theory of mise en scene - mostly Italian, but with an eye for American, English and French contributions as well. It outlines the narrative regarding modern mise en scene , which has taken shape during the twentieth century, and introduces the plural contributions of new scholarship, discussing both critical approaches and canonical ones.
