Abstract

Purpose: To assess the results of glaucoma screening in the population over age 40.Methods: A population‐based glaucoma screening was performed at Habib Thameur Hospital, Tunis TUNISIA on March 12, 2023. Screening included intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement with Goldmann applanation tonometry, visual acuity measurement (VA) with the Snellen chart, fundus examination to detect characteristic optic disc changes, and questions regarding systemic diseases, family history of glaucoma, and current medications. Results: A total of 280 subjects were examined. Forty‐six had ocular hypertension, including 12 glaucomatous. All these patients were referred to the ophthalmology department for a complete ophthalmological examination, explorations (pachymetry, OCT of the optic nerve, visual field), treatment and regular follow‐up. Twenty‐two had unilateral or bilateral cataracts which we scheduled for surgery and fifteen had diabetic retinopathy at various stages which were referred to our specialist consultation for treatment. Conclusions: The need for effective and early detection and management of glaucoma may reduce the prevalence of glaucoma‐induced blindness.
