Abstract

The glass transition in a lattice model (bond-fluctuation model) of dense two-dimensional polymer melt has been studied using the Monte Carlo technique. Attention has been paid to the diffusive motion of the polymers in the system and its dependence on the size of the lattice. At any temperature, the melt is equilibrated so that the results correspond to those in the limit of an infinitely slow cooling rate. A striking size dependence is observed in the dynamical properties of the model, suggesting the presence of a characteristic length of strongly cooperative regions in the system at low temperature.
