Abstract

The glass forming ability (GFA) and magnetic properties of a Gd55Ni25Al18Zn2 bulk metallic glass (BMG) were studied and compared with the Gd55Ni25Al20 BMG. It was found that the GFA and magnetic properties of the Gd55Ni25Al20 BMG were obviously improved by minor Zn addition as a replacement of Al. The mechanism for the improved GFA and magnetic properties by minor Zn addition was studied. The field dependence of magnetic entropy change was investigated for a better understanding on the magneto-caloric behaviors of the Gd55Ni25Al18Zn2 BMGs.
