Abstract

We report a new bulk glass-forming alloy Gd55Al20Ni25.The bulk sample of the alloy is prepared in the shape of rods indiameter 2 mm by suction casting. The rod exhibits typical amorphouscharacteristics in the x-ray diffraction pattern, paramagnetic propertyat 300 K, distinct glass transition and multi-step crystallizationbehaviour in differential scanning calorimetry traces. The glassformation ability of the alloy is investigated by using the reducedglass transition temperature Trg and the parameter γ.Kinetics of glass transition and primary crystallization is alsostudied. The fragility parameter m obtained from theVogel–Fulcher–Tammann dependence of glass transition temperatureTg on ln ϕ (ϕ is the heating rate) classifies the bulkmetallic glasses into the intermediate category according to Angell'sclassification.
