Abstract
Chemical strengthening and thermal tempering are two common methods for improving the mechanical properties of silicate glasses; this article compares these two methods. It reviews the generation of surface compression and the kinetics of ion-exchange of alkali ions. Moreover, the crucial parameters as well as non-conventional methods for ion-exchange strengthening, are discussed.
