Abstract

INTRODUCTIONWILSON AND EDWARDS (1952) observed a cyanosis of the comb in hens deprived of water 24 hours. Marion et al. (1956) reported increased mortality in day-old chicks not immediately placed on feed and water. Williams (1959) indicated that water starvation was sometimes associated with Salmonella infection in poultry. Fisher et al. (1961) and Bierer et al. (1965) observed symptoms and lesions of bluecomb disease in hens deprived of water. Starvation of chicks and poults has been reported to lower body temperature and alter blood values (Bierer et al., 1964; Gee and Huston, 1965; Haller and Sunde, 1965). Marsden et al. (1964, 1965) observed losses in 2 to 3-weeks-old poults 48 hours after water deprivation, and deaths due to convulsions when water was replenished. Haller and Sunde (1965) found that withholding water from 1 to 2-weeks-old poults for 48 or 60 hours retarded growth more than 28 days, body temperature …
