Abstract

Purpose: Previous knee joint injury, such as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, is one of the strongest risk factors for the onset of knee osteoarthritis (OA). One in two people who sustain an ACL injury will develop knee OA before the age of 40. ACL injuries are common in high-risk sports that require athletes to jump, land and pivot, with women at 2-8 times greater risk than men. Primary OA prevention strategies, such as exercise-based ACL injury prevention programs, can reduce ACL injury among women by 67%.
