Abstract

Seto Inland Sea area contains the national park, marine traffic routes and fishing bank, where many fishing boats and various kinds of vessels are sailing. Especially, feeder vessels, which are involved in foreign-trade between Japan and other Asian countries, are making the traffic more and more complicated in the area. And those vessels are less than 10,000 gross tonnages and do not follow compulsory pilotage, and as the result, they have caused an increasing the number of collision incidents. n this paper, the authors analyze the ship collisions in Seto Inland Sea using Geographic Information System (GIS), and investigate the relationship between ship collisions and the near misses that have been reported from the Seto Inland Sea Pilots Association. For example, the authors create a hazard map with easy suggestions to ship operators for the purpose of contribution to safety of marine traffic.
