Abstract

This article focuses on geographic information systems (GIS) and their possible benefits in cultural landscape studies. The main task is to shed light on the changes that are taking place in cultural landscapes in western Norway. To illustrate this, some research from Lindas, north of Bergen, is used to elucidate changes in cultural agrarian landscapes over the past 30 to 40 years. The presentation of map illustrations as compared with other illustrative methods is emphasized, and the use of GIS is evaluated.
