Abstract

Land use planning needs reliable tools to estimate a realistic wind erosion risk in a high spatial and temporalresolution for the development and implementation of sustainable concepts for a long-term environmentallycorrect and socially responsible land use. The objective of this project is the estimation of the wind erosion riskas a basis for protection strategies.Based on a Geographical Information System, the influence of soil properties and the landscape structure areanalyzed. First, the wind erosion risk for all agricultural used areas is estimated from texture and hydromorphyinformation. Then the influence of landscape elements is calculated as the reduction of the wind velocity foreight wind directions and weighted for the frequency of wind velocities above the threshold of 8 m/s. Therenewed classification of the wind erosion risk shows a decrease of about 40% from the highest to lower riskclasses and more than 30% from the medium in those classes without any wind erosion risk. That emphasizesthe meaning of landscape structure on the wind erosion which should always be included in regional analyzes.
