Abstract

Land suitability evaluation is fundamental in deciSion-making on land use planning. In 1976, FAO published A framework for land evaluation in which the procedures and methods of land suitability evaluation were explained. However, the framework is basically a qualitative one and it is difficult to make a direct connection of evaluation results with decision-making on land use planning. Dent and Young pointed out that it is possible to conduct an automatic land suitability evaluation by the aid of computer, but the approach is only limited in computer processing or land evaluation data. The present study is an attempt to apply the Geographic Information System of GIS technology to improve the efficiency and precision of the evaluation to decision-making on land use planning.
