Abstract

The aim of present study was to investigate the anti-stress potential of ginseng against immobilization stress. Male SD rats (n=18) were divided into three groups; (i) control, (ii) immobilization stress and (iii) immobilization stress plus oral administration of ginseng. The ginseng administered group showed a significant reversal in the stress-induced effect on thymus weight, increasing the tissue weights by 22% (p£¼0.05). Administraction of ginseng to the stressed animals reversed the increase in the adrenal weight induced by stress. Ginseng administration significantly decreased the stress-induced increase in the plasma corticosterone level by 49%. The ginseng administration significantly decreased the stress-induced increase of TH, DBH and P450 mRNA level (p£¼0.05). The present study suggests that the anti-stress effect of ginseng may be mediate by normalization of stress-induced changes in the circulating hormones, a reversal of tissue weight, TH, DBH and P450 gene expression, thereby returning the body to normal homeostasis. *This study was supported by technology Development Program for Agriculture and Forestry (202007-03-03-WT011), Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Korea.
