Abstract
A magnetically levitated and insulated torus of meter-size dimensions can be charged up to gigavolt potentials. Discharging the torus through a breach made by a plasma jet or spark gap, an intense relativistic ion beam can be extracted from a magnetically insulated diode. Because of its self-magnetic field, the beam can be transported over large distances, a property well suited for thermonuclear microexplosion ignition.
