Abstract

Rear Admir al Scott Giberson, principal consultant for the National HIV/AIDS Program of the Indian Health Services (IHS), has been appointed by the U.S. Surgeon General to serve as chief professional officer for pharmacy in the Public Health Service (PHS). Giberson was appointed March 16 to the four-year assignment, succeeding Rear Admiral Robert E. Pittman in the position. While serving as a chief professional officer, Giberson will continue his work with the AIDS program at IHS, where he is also acting director of clinical and community services. The PHS Commissioned Corps recognizes chief professional officers for 11 medical, scientific, and allied health professions. Pharmacy is one of six professions whose chief officer assumes the flag-level rank of rear admiral. As the chief professional officer for pharmacy, Giberson assists the surgeon general’s office and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with recruitment of Commissioned Corps and civil-service pharmacists into PHS. He also assigns and deploys pharmacists where needed and helps to advance their careers and help them become leaders in the profession.
