Abstract

Giant magnetic resonances of order λ>1 are investigated by the RPA technique and their effects on renormalising low energy magnetic transitions are examined. It is found that the reduction in M2 and M4 s.p. transition strength in light nuclei and in the Pb region can be accounted for by the destructive effects of isoscalar and isovector core polarization.
