Abstract

The low-energy light heavy-ion fusion cross sections have been examined in view of the presence of the giant-dipole resonance (GDR) and giant-quadrupole resonance (GQR) excitations. A correlation between the resonances observed in the heavy-ion reactions and the known GDR and GQR excitations has been established for both the gross and fine structures. The ∼3 MeV wide enhancement observed in the 12C + 13C → 25Mg fusion cross section overlaps with the lower part of the 25Mg GDR, and the ∼3 MeV wide resonance observed in the 9Be + 9Be → 18O → nn+ 16O and 7Li + 11B → 18O → nn + 16O reactions overlaps with the higher part of the T < = 1 18 O GDR observed via photonuclear excitation. The fine-structure resonances observed in the 12C + 12C → 24Mg reaction are strongly correlated with those of the 24Mg GQR observed via 24Mg(α, α') inelastic scattering.
