Abstract

Pulsed laser deposition has been used to grow thin films of Cu/Fe, Ag/Co and Ag/CoFe with a granular structure, over a broad range of compositions, in order to optimize the giant magneto-resistance effect. The average grain size was determined from the broadening of the measured X-ray diffraction line profiles, associated with the relevant magnetic element, to be in the range 5–20 nm, which is compatible with the critical diameter calculated for GMR granular materials. A GMR effect of up to 6% in 1T at 15 K was observed, originating from spin-dependent scattering of electrons by ferromagnetic grains. GMR curves reflect the co-existence of ferromagnetic and small super-paramagnetic particles in both silver and copper matrix films.
