Abstract

An attempt is made to set experimental limits on the centroid energy of isoscalar monopole strength in light nuclei, by making use of sum rules and measured EO transition rates. The model dependence of the non-energy-weighted sum rule is tested in 16O and a reasonable estimate of the centroid energy obtained. Comparison with a simple macroscopic model allows the extraction of the nuclear compressibility. Experimental and theoretical consequences of these results are briefly discussed.
