Abstract
Summary Giant hypertrophic gastritis is a rare disease which cannot be diagnosed clinically. Radiologically it falls into three main types affecting the middle third, the fundus, or the pyloric end of the stomach. The differential diagnosis from malignant disease is a problem in which gastroscopy, h˦matology, or biochemistry cannot help. It is a benign condition and it is not cured by surgery, which is only indicated when there is severe h˦morrhage. Its aetiology is unknown and there is no specific treatment. Five cases are recorded, one in an African.
