Abstract

Magnetostriction and thermal expansion measurements have been performed on the Laves-phase compound TbMn 2, in the range of temperature 5–300K and using high pulsed magnetic fields up to 15 T. The forced volume magnetostriction at low temperatures within the ordered magnetic phase, reaches a value of ω=−17×10 −3 under a field of 15 T, which constitutes the highest forced magnetostriction never observed in rare earth intermetallics. This sound result is explained on the basis of the instability of the ordered Mn magnetic moment sublattice at high enough applied magnetic fields.
