Abstract

The value of the radiative strength function observed in (n, γ) reactions at the neutron binding energy is compatible with the value deduced from the inverse (γ, n) reaction with the help of the hydrodynamical model. An analysis of the observed energy dependence of the radiative strength function suggests that the family of displaced resonance-absorption curves based on the various excited states of 196Pt have roughly similar shapes in the excitation energy range from 6.3 to 7.9 MeV. More generally, it is made plausible that the value of a certain mean energy should be displaced by an amount precisely equal to the energy displacement of the initial state.
