Abstract

We discuss the central charge in continuous families of two-dimensional conformal field theories. In a nonunitary conformal field theory the {ital c} theorem does not hold: A critical line can have a continuously varying central charge. This is illustrated with the bosonic-string ghost system and may pose difficulties for attempts to formulate string theory on the space of 2D field theories.
