Abstract

The subject of this paper is a longstanding interest of the author; the views expressed in it are his own and not all of them are shared by other authorities. The editor believes that the argument for new research and fresh thinking in the field of traditional materials and construction is both timely and well-made. It is to be hoped that the arguments which the author makes and the opinions which he expresses will stimulate new interest in the construction history and the ‘architectural geography’ of Scotland.
