Abstract

Introduction: All is not well in the heart of many midwifery students. Contributing to this malady are: gaps and discrepancy between midwifery theory and practice, challenging work/study/ life balance, difficult relationships in the workplace and the attrition rate. This proposed presentation is based on the heartcentred approach for student support called ‘The Student Midwife Support Circle (SMSC)’. It is envisioned that the concept of SMSC’s would be different to clinical supervision groups in that the student has the experience of being ‘midwifed’. Method: With relevance to the holistic wellbeing of the midwifery student, I will present a 15 min spoken presentation of the concept, process, progress to date and future vision of Student Midwife Support Circles provide understanding of what the difference between Clinical Supervision and support circles present an example of some of the important topics thatwould come up in circle such as: 1. Creating and being in sacred space: How to create or facilitate the safe and sacred space, the ‘container’ for birth work. 2. Understanding what it is we personally bring to the birthing field: Unravelling our own ‘birth stories’ and agenda around pregnancy, birth and parenting. 3. Fear. 4. Challenges in the Birthing Field. Results: In this way the SMSC will be seen as a supportive and respected space with the important aspects of safety and acceptance. Together with learning the art of listening, being heard, observation and understanding of our personal agenda’s, the importance of self care and self nurture, understanding our self better in order to understand others (empathy and compassion). Conclusion: It is envisioned that Student Midwife Support Circle programs will allow students to feel inspired and reassured along the journey. Hence it is with the ultimate intention for Midwifery retention within this current work force.
