Abstract

The process of searching for references on the Medline database by the use of Boolean operators is described. Both online and compact disc (CD-ROM) sources for biomedical subjects are indicated and the advantages and disadvantages of each medium discussed. The advances envisaged through the advent of end-user searching facilities on the Bath Information and Data Services (BIDS) system and the development of powerful telecommunications networks are described. Reference is made to bibliographic software packages available for organising personal databases. The effect of the Copyright, Design and Patents Act, 1988 on the work of the clinical researcher and teacher as it applies to the use of photocopiers, fax machines and optical scanners is briefly indicated. The way in which these rules apply to printed materials, illustrations, computer programmes and databases is outlined together with a note on the concepts of multiple and systematic single copying.
