Abstract
Laura Wood opens Chapter 1: Getting Started of Careers in Creative Arts Therapies by explaining the difference between careers in the arts as a professional artist, as an arts educator, as an artist-in-healthcare, and as a creative arts therapist. This is followed by essays by two creative arts therapists and interviews with two creative arts therapists who explain what drew them to a profession in the creative arts therapies. Kareen King worked for many years as a puppeteer; Teri Holmberg started as a school music teacher; Mariah Meyer LeFeber studied dance and psychology, then learned she could put them together to help others; and Sarah Edwards trained in theater and worked with people with disabilities. The chapter is concluded by Denise Boston with a call for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals to seriously consider careers in creative arts therapies in order to provide the field with multicultural representation for clients.
