Abstract

This week the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (AATOD) holds its conference in Las Vegas, at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. The meeting theme is “Treating Opioid Use Disorder: So much more than medication.” That is very timely, considering that there is a move to make treatment with methadone, what opioid treatment programs are allowed to prescribe and dispense, medication‐only by office‐based physicians. This move is codified in proposed legislation. As we have pointed out many times, only rarely in this country has methadone been prescribed for OUD outside of an OTP, and when it is, only highly qualified methadone‐experienced physicians have been allowed to do it. We will be at AATOD looking at how the organization and its members are working to improve treatment for patients.
