Abstract

The process of modern scientific publication is a multi‐faceted and complex enterprise. The system‐really a culture‐comprises the collaboration and partnership of editors and their editorial offices with publishers and their production team. The "customers" ‐the benefactors‐ are the scientific community, the authors, and the multitude of reviewers who commit‐based mostly on academic citizenship and a trust in the process‐ to provide evidence‐based critiques of the article submissions. Indeed editorial peer review (PR)is the centerpiece of the enterprise. My presentation includes 2 goals: to describe the operational process of manuscript mangement and to highlight recent advances in our knowledge of PR. The learner will ideally be able to summarize this recent emerging body of literature on PR and the strengths, limitations, and misconceptions of the process.
