Abstract

The retroviral enzyme integrase plays an essential role in the virus replication cycle by catalyzing thecovalent insertion of newly synthesized viral DNA into the host cell chromosome early after infection. Now, Kessl etal. report a second function of integrase: binding to the viral RNA genome in virion particles late in the virus replication cycle to promote particle maturation.
