Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is important because it is one of the commonest medical conditions in pregnancy and is associated with an increased risk of short- and longer-term adverse outcomes. Several strategies to identify women with GDM have been recommended; however, it is unclear what strategy is best for improving health outcomes. A ‘step up’ approach to treatment is effective at improving some adverse outcomes, but may increase others. The growing prevalence of GDM is placing an increasing burden on health services. A sustained approach to supporting women to live healthily and improve modifiable risk factors for GDM is needed.
