of introducing mathematics-variables of higher types. Unlike mine, Quine's proposal makes no "ontological" distinction between such a world and one that contains, in addition, simple characters of the higher types. It seems to me that by making this distinction my proposal reconstructs what some nonpositivistic philosophers may try to express when they insist that while, for example, colors exist, numbers and grammatical categories merely subsist. In this sense at least, I believe that my proposal represents a more adequate analysis of the traditional ontological meaning of 'exist.'
