Abstract

GeSe-based thin film presented excellent photothermal (PT) effect in addition to its photovoltaic (PV) performance, inspired by the remarkable achievements of GeSe-based photoelectrode for solar water splitting to produce hydrogen, we are excited to find that the coupling effect of PT and PV of GeSe-based photoelectrode is also suitable for efficient and sustainable solar seawater desalination. Here, we first applied GeSe-based photoelectrode for solar natural seawater desalination by combining GeSe-based solar desalination cell and redox flow, the thermoelectric device (TD) and GeSe-based photoelectrode integrated solar desalination cell to maximizes the utilization of solar energy. We efficiently convert natural seawater to nearly freshwater through this novel method, the total dissolved solids (TDS) and salinity is decreased from 29 g/L and 27 parts per thousand (ppt) for natural seawater to approximately 1.0 g/L and 0.7 ppt for desalinated seawater after the desalination test, respectively, and the average desalination efficiency can be maintained above 94% more than 80 h. This innovative desalination technology has the advantages of high efficiency, energy saving and environmental protection, which has promising application potential.
