Gerontechnology acceptance by elderly Hong Kong Chinese: a senior technology acceptance model (STAM)
The purpose of this study was to develop and test a senior technology acceptance model (STAM) aimed at understanding the acceptance of gerontechnology by older Hong Kong Chinese people. The proposed STAM extended previous technology acceptance models and theories by adding age-related health and ability characteristics of older people. The proposed STAM was empirically tested using a cross-sectional questionnaire survey with a sample of 1012 seniors aged 55 and over in Hong Kong. The result showed that STAM was strongly supported and could explain 68% of the variance in the use of gerontechnology. For older Hong Kong Chinese, individual attributes, which include age, gender, education, gerontechnology self-efficacy and anxiety, and health and ability characteristics, as well as facilitating conditions explicitly and directly affected technology acceptance. These were better predictors of gerontechnology usage behaviour (UB) than the conventionally used attitudinal factors (usefulness and ease of use).Practitioner Summary: Previous studies have not given much consideration to age-related health and associated abilities when examining acceptance of technology by the ageing population. By encompassing conventional technology acceptance constructs together with age-related health and ability characteristics, the present study was able to identify more factors affecting gerontechnology acceptance by older Hong Kong Chinese.

Global deployment in information technology (IT) requires understandings of the cultural constraints in technology acceptance and usage behavior. Prior research indicates that the salient technology acceptance models may not be applicable to all cultures since empirical support was mainly obtained from North America. Cultural impact on user acceptance is still at the early stage of research. There has been little research done on technology acceptance and usage behavior in the context of China, which exhibits distinctive cultural differences from countries in North America. The purpose of this thesis is to test the cross-cultural applicability of Technology Acceptance Model in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and to investigate the influence of cultural values on user acceptance of IT. Based on a synthesis of technology acceptance and cultural theories, this study incorporates work related cultural values into Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The four cultural values of individualism/collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity/femininity identified by Hofstede are posited to either directly influence or to moderate user acceptance to email in the context of the PRC. Data were collected from the banking industry in the PRC. Cultural values were measured at the individual level to avoid over generalizations of cultural typology and to remedy the inadequacy of post hoc explanation in conventional IS cultural studies. Instead of using the scores of national culture proposed by Hofstede’s cultural study in 1980, this study measures cultural values in terms of personal traits to reflect the changes in and the complexity of cultural values in face of a two-decades of societal change. Structural equation models (SEMs) and moderated structural equation models (MSEMs) are used in the study to explore the direct impact and the moderating effect of cultural values. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural path analysis using LISREL were performed to analyze data collected. The findings show that cultural values have both direct impact and moderation effect on user acceptance to email. The TAM general model was found to be applicable in the Chinese context. Collectivism was found to be an antecedent of Subjective Norms, while Masculinity has no significant influence on Perceived Usefulness. In addition, Power Distance was found to moderate the relationship between Subjective Norms and Intention to Use email; while Uncertainty Avoidance moderates the relationship between Perceived Ease of Use and Perceived Usefulness of email. Purpose – This paper aims to examine the user’s willingness of golfers toward the use of GPS navigation based on the technology readiness and acceptance models. Design/methodology/approach – This study developed the research structure based on the theory of the technology acceptance and readiness model to address the relationship between technology readiness, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, user’s attitude and behavioral intention. A purposive sampling questionnaire was used in this study to investigate golf participants in Central Taiwan. In all, 245 copies of the questionnaire were issued. About 240 copies were returned and after removing the invalid copies, there were 230 valid questionnaires for a valid response rate of 95.8 per cent. Findings – The research results indicated that technology readiness has a significant influence on perceived usefulness, technology readiness has a significant influence on perceived ease of use, perceived ease of use has a significant influence on perceived usefulness, perceived usefulness has no significant influence on user’s attitude, perceived ease of use has a significant influence on user’s attitude, user’s attitude has no significant influence on behavioral intention and perceived usefulness has a significant influence on behavioral intention. Originality/value – The technology acceptance model has been widely used to examine user's acceptance and willingness toward computer technology or an information product. This study, hence, is based on this model to investigate the user's willingness of golfers toward golf GPS and shall serve as a reference for future golf sports promotion and device R&D.

Title of Thesis: Measuring nurses’ intention and behavior towards EMR in a south-India’s hospital. Author: Vanitha Paramasivam Thesis advised by: Professor Hsyien- Chia Wen PhD. Objective: Electronic medical records have been implemented in many hospitals in recent years. Although healthcare providers benefit from their effective data processing, less attention has been focused on nurses, who provide 24-hour patient care. Individual nurses all have different expertise, background and computer skills, all of which will determine their ability to use an electronic medical information system. The aim of this study is to measure nurses’ intentions and behavior towards using EMRs through their perceptions, concerns, and attitude. Study design and methods: This study was conducted on the nursing staff of a tertiary hospital in India, using a structured questionnaire, which was developed based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Theory Planned Behavior (TPB) models. The variables in our study were: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, subjective norm, computer literacy, privacy, security, intention to use and usage behavior. The latter two were the dependent variables. A total of 315 questionnaires were distributed to the nurses, of them, 282 responses were collected, representing a response rate of 89.5%. Results: The results indicated significant relationships between five of the independent variables and the intention to use the EMR; these are: perceived usefulness (p =0.004), perceived ease of use (p=0.032), subjective norm (p=0.0001), computer literacy (p=0.0001) and privacy (p=0.005). We also found that the intention to use (p=0.0001), perceived ease of vii use (P=0.005) and computer literacy (p=0.005) affected nurses’ usage behaviour of the EMR system. Conclusions: The findings clearly show that the intention of nurses to use an EMR system significantly influenced their actual EMR usage behaviour in a large Indian hospital. Thus, we suggest that the successful implementation of EMR in health care organizations be continued and that on-the-job training, education programs and other professional development outlets be provided to equip health care professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively operate these systems. A respectable amount of work dealing with Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) clearly indicates a popularity of TAM in the field of technology acceptance in general. Nevertheless, there is still a gap in existing knowledge regarding representative academic literature that underlie research on TAM in educational context. The main objective of this systematic literature review is to provide an overview of the current state of research efforts on TAM application in the field of learning and teaching for a variety of learning domains, learning technologies and types of users. Through systematic search by the use of EBSCO Discovery Service, the review has identified 71 relevant studies ranged between 2003 and 2018. The main findings indicate that TAM and its many different versions represent a credible model for facilitating assessment of diverse learning technologies. TAM's core variables, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, have been proven to be antecedent factors affecting acceptance of learning with technology. The paper identifies some gaps in current work and suggests areas for further investigation. The results of this systematic review provide a better understanding of TAM acceptance studies in educational context and create a firm foundation for advancing knowledge in the field. Practitioner Notes What is already known about this topic Technology acceptance research in teaching and learning context has become an attractive trend. A number of reviews and meta‐analysis focused on specific topics related to technology acceptance in education have been conducted. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is the key model in understanding predictors of human behaviour towards potential acceptance or rejection of the technology. What this paper adds The state of current research on Technology Acceptance Model application in educational context lacks comprehensive reviews addressing variety of learning domains, learning technologies and types of users. The paper presents systematic review of relevant academic literature on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) in the field of learning and teaching. The paper provides empirical evidence on the predictive validity of the models based on TAM presented in selected literature. The findings revealed that TAM, along with its many different versions called TAM++, is a leading scientific paradigm and credible model for facilitating assessment of diverse technological deployments in educational context. TAM's core variables, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, have been proven to be antecedent factors that have affected acceptance of learning with technology. Implications for practice and/or policy The systematic review adds to the body of knowledge and creates a firm foundation for advancing knowledge in the field. By following the most common research objectives and/or by filling current gaps in applied research methods, chosen sample groups and types of result analysis, an own study could be conducted. Future research may well focus on identifying additional external factors that could further explain acceptance and usage of various learning technologies.

This study analyses the implementation of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) in the Curriculum Review course among students of Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara. This study aims to identify the factors that influence students’ acceptance and understanding of technology in the learning process. A quantitative approach was employed, utilising a structured survey distributed to 125 selected participants using the purposive sampling technique. The research instrument is a questionnaire developed based on TAM constructs, including (1) perceived usefulness, (2) perceived ease of use, and (3) attitude toward using. Data analysis employs Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) techniques to examine the relationships between variables. The research hypothesis examines the impact of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use on attitudes and intentions to utilise technology in learning. The results show that: (1) perceived usefulness of technology among students positively affects attitudes toward using technology (β=0.65, p<0.05), (2) perceived ease of use of technology among students significantly positively affects attitudes toward using technology among students (β=0.58, p<0.05), (3) attitudes towards using technology among students significantly positively affect intentions to use technology among students (β=0.72, p<0.05). The TAM model is proven to explain 68% of the variance in technology acceptance among students. This suggests that the understanding and acceptance of technology among students in the Curriculum Review course are influenced by the perceived usefulness and ease of use, which are in turn mediated by attitudes toward using technology.

The social, psychological, physical, and financial benefits of digital inclusion are of increasing importance for older persons. However, older persons are often less inclined to utilise technological communication with reports of perceived poor technology acceptance. In this context, a study was conducted to investigate communication technology acceptance in older persons living in residential care. A cross sectional survey of residents (≥60 yrs) of four inner city residences in Durban, South Africa was conducted to assess communication technology access and technology acceptance defined as Usage Behaviour. A researcher-administered questionnaire was based on the Senior Technology Acceptance Model (STAM). Descriptive statistics of STAM factors and structural equation model (SEM) were conducted to test this model, to quantify the importance of various technology acceptance factors on Usage Behaviour among older persons living in residential care. The survey had a 72.1% response rate (n=277). Most of the respondents owned mobile phones (87.6%), although there was low smartphone ownership. Family desire to communicate and ease of use motivated mobile phone acquisition. Behaviour Intention, Facilitating Conditions, Attitude to Life and Satisfaction and education level were significantly associated with Usage Behaviour. Gerontechnology Anxiety and Age showed significant negative associations with Usage Behaviour. The acceptance of communication technology in this setting was low and predominantly influenced by Attitudinal and Technological Context factors together with age and education.

Based on previous theoretical streams, the present study integrates technology readiness (TR) into the technology acceptance model (TAM) in the context of consumer adoption of e‐service systems, and theorizes that the impact of TR on use intention is completely mediated by both perceptions of usefulness and ease of use. TAM was originally developed to predict people's technology‐adopting behavior at work environments, but this research stemmed from a questioning of its applicability in marketing (i.e., non‐work) settings. The differences between the two settings are exhibited by consumers' self‐determining selection behavior and their high involvement in the e‐service creation and delivery process. This paper first reviews the TAM and the construct of technology readiness, and then proposes and empirically tests an integrated Technology Readiness and Acceptance Model (TRAM) to augment TAM by taking technology readiness construct into the realm of consumers' adoption of innovations. The results indicate that TRAM substantially broadens the applicability and the explanatory power of either of the prior models and may be a better way to gauge technology adoption in situations where adoption is not mandated by organizational objectives. Further, theoretical and practical implications and future research directions are discussed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of a fresh food platform on users' technology acceptance model, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, trust, customer satisfaction, and repurchase intention. As a result of the verification, perceived ease of use was found to have a significant effect on perceived usefulness. In the technology acceptance model, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were found to have a significant effect on trust and customer satisfaction. Trust was found to have an effect on customer satisfaction, and customer satisfaction was found to have a significant effect on repurchase intention. It was found that trust had a mediating effect in the relationship between technology acceptance theory and customer satisfaction. Through this study, we reconfirmed the relationship between fresh food platform users' trust in the technology acceptance model, customer satisfaction, and repurchase intention. In other words, this suggests that consumers build trust based on the perceived ease and usefulness of fresh food platforms, and when they are satisfied, this can lead to repurchase intention.

Information Technology has long been a well-known research area, but this changed considerably when the Internet became prominent just over a decade ago. Many researchers have studied and proposed theories and models of Technology Acceptance in order to predict and explain user behaviour with technology to account for rapid change in both technologies themselves and their environments. Each theory or model has been proposed with different sets of determinants and moderators. More importantly, most of the research has been conducted in the U.S. Therefore, it is questioned whether the technology acceptance models and theories that have been developed, modified, and extended in the U.S. can be used in other regions such as South East Asia and more specifically in Thailand. It is questioned whether there might be other determinants and moderators that also play important roles in this specific environment. This research study has seven objectives, of which five have already been achieved. From the findings, despite the fact that academics hardly used the Internet (used a few times a month) for teaching in class and providing a personal Web-Base for facilitating teaching, they intended to use it more (a few times a week) in the future. On the contrary, at the time of the survey, they used the Internet rather often (five to six times a week) for enhancing teaching knowledge, searching information for their research, personal tasks, enhancing personal knowledge, and using email for personal contact. Significantly, no matter how often they currently used the Internet, they all intended to use the Internet more often in all type of tasks in the future. With respect to motivation to make full use of the Internet in their work, they not only ‘quite agree’ that if good facilities were available to support usage (e.g. good computer hardware and software, good communication network etc.) this would motivate them, but they also thought that their strong intentions for providing student contacts, the university’ policy to be Research Oriented and become an e-University in the future, also play an important role in motivating them to make full use of the Internet in their work. On the contrary, the availability of technicians and Internet training motivated them less. They also thought that using the Internet helped improve their professional practice (such as teaching in class, preparing teaching materials, research, and administrative tasks), and helped improve personal developments (such as improving their academic and personal knowledge) and helped improve their quality of working life (such as saving their expense e.g. searching Information from e-Journal and Websites and using email in communication with others). Nevertheless, in respect of improving quality of working life and helping them have more time for leisure and creative thinking, they simply ‘slightly agreed’. With these findings, it is interesting to investigate deeply about academics ’behaviour and intention. Five core constructs (determinants) were examined including perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social influence, self-efficacy, and facilitating conditions together with moderators such as gender, age, experience, and some cultural aspects of whether these constructs influenced academic’s behaviour. Survey research methodology (questionnaire and semi-structured interviews) were used to collect primary data from Business Schools in Thailand, and the survey yielded 455 usable questionnaires. Structural Equation Modelling with AMOS is also being used to analyse data and is expected to provide evidence to generate the Technology Acceptance Model that is both substantively meaningful and statistically well-fitting(Byrne 2001, 2006) . By generating the Technology Acceptance Model in accordance with the main research objectives, it is expected that the generated research model will have the power to explain/predict Internet acceptance and usage behaviour. A thorough understanding of the model may help practitioners to analyse the reasons for resistance toward the technology and would also help to take efficient measures to improve user acceptance and usage of the technology (Davis, 1989).

Aim of this paper is to review technology (IS) acceptance theories and models, recognizing empirical evidence available to support the suitability of each theoretical model in explaining academicians’ acceptance of online learning technology. Understanding the factors influencing system usage is crucial for decision-makers to recognize potential user needs and concerns, which could be addressed during the development phase of a system. Thus, for decades, researchers have been trying to understand why people accept new technologies. As a result, a wide variety of theories and models explaining the concept of technology acceptance. Some prominent theoretical models explaining technology acceptance are, “Theory of Reasoned Action”, “Diffusion of Innovation theory”, “Theory of Planned Behavior”, “Social Cognitive Theory”, “Technology Acceptance Model”, “Model of PC Utilization”, “Motivational Model”, “Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology”, “UTAUT 2”, “UTAUT 3”. The concept of academic’s acceptance of online learning technology can be explained through several determinants that are operationalized through above information systems models.

Background: Acceptance of information technology by teachers of smart schools in which learning-teaching methods are based on information and communication technology is of great importance. Objectives: The present study aimed to identify the role of organizational culture in accepting technology among teachers of smart high schools in Karaj, Iran, based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Methods: The present study was conducted by a correlational method, which was of prediction type. Among 5,630 teachers of smart high schools in Karaj city in the 2018 - 2019 school year, 400 teachers were selected by multistage random cluster sampling method. Organizational culture was measured by Denison’s organizational culture questionnaire (2000). For assessing the acceptance of technology among teachers, a researcher-made questionnaire was used. The questionnaire’s construct validity was confirmed by the confirmatory factor analysis method. The reliability was confirmed by Cronbach’s alpha of 0.86, 0.74, 0.88, 0.73, and 0.81 for the dimensions of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward use, intention to use, and actual use, respectively. The data were analyzed by structural equation modeling in AMOS V. 24 software. Results: All the direct and indirect coefficients between the research variables were statistically significant (P < 0.01). This means that organizational culture was effective on acceptance of technology among teachers of smart schools and the recommended conceptual model among teachers of smart schools was valid. Conclusions: The process of the effect of organizational culture on the acceptance of technology and the relationship between the components of the TAM were discussed. Based on the results, all the direct and indirect coefficients between the research variables were statistically significant (P < 0.01), that is, organizational culture was effective on acceptance of technology among smart school teachers, and the proposed conceptual model was reliable among teachers of smart schools.

PurposeTechnology acceptance research in the L&T contexts has a necessity for enabling the significant inclusion of technology in educational settings (Scherer et al., 2019). Despite the propensity for information communication and technology to enhance the teaching and learning process, the acceptance or rejection of learning technology is essential. Technological acceptance model (TAM) has evolved to become a key model to depict the predictors of human behaviour towards prospective rejection or acceptance of technology (Granic and Marangunic, 2019). In their recent systematic review of the extensive literature on TAM, Granic and Marangunic (2019) found that most of TAM research originate from Asia (Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea and China), Europe, North America, Middle East and Africa. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, research on TAM has been very scarce in small island economies. This study aims to guide the empirical model of Al-Fraihat et al. (2020), which wants to uncover the quality of learning by understanding the intentions and satisfaction of tertiary education learners on the acceptance and use of information technology (IT) for e-learning, during the confinement period.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a quantitative approach. The proposed framework was borrowed from Al-Fraihat et al. (2020) and amended based on the contextual aspect of the study. The model proposed by Al-Fraihat et al. (2020) takes into consideration the quality of e-learning through technical system quality, information quality, service quality, educational system quality, support system quality, learner quality and instructor quality. The framework has as the basis the TAM where the perceived satisfaction, perceived usefulness, use and benefits of E-learning have been evaluated. This current study evaluated the quality of the e-learning platform from the students’ perspective in the confinement period. The service quality construct has been broken into three different dimensions, namely, service quality from an IT perspective, service quality from an administration perspective and service quality from the faculty represented by the Head of Departments. Another dimension has been added so as to evaluate the learner’s point of view when studying during confinement, namely, confinement and learning quality.FindingsThe findings of this study did not support H25, that is the hypothesis that perceived usefulness has a positive relationship with perceived satisfaction, in contradiction to similar previous studies that confirmed the relationship (Al-Sabawy et al., 2011; Al-Fraihat et al., 2020). However, interestingly, the findings of this research supported the relationship between perceived satisfaction and benefits (H26). This means that the greater the satisfaction of the learner, the greater the benefits on students. The results of this study further supported that there is a positive relationship between perceived usefulness and benefits (H27); there is a positive relationship between perceived usefulness and use (H28); and finally, there is a positive relationship between use and benefits (H29). Such relationships were also found in the existing literature (Al-Sabawy et al., 2011; Cidral et al., 2018; Al-Fraihat et al., 2020). The perception of the usefulness of the e-learning system determines the benefits, usefulness and system use. When the learners feel that the system is enhancing their learning, learning activities and performance, hence learning more effectively, they tend to see the e-learning system as useful and they are more likely to use the e-learning system/tool. The use of the tool/system, thus positively impacts the benefits that the learners derived from the system.Originality/valueThe COVID-19 and overnight decision for a country-wide lockdown drastically changed the education sector. School and all teaching institutions were closed. However, most universities had to review their teaching and learning models to introduce e-learning to ensure the semester’s progress. Hence, the use of the various LMS tools became a necessity overnight. This study on e-learning in Mauritius uses the TAM as the theoretical foundation because the theory has long been extensively used to investigate the quality of learning eg. Davis (1989), Scherer et al. (2019), Al-Fraihat et al. (2020).

Electronic Word-of-Mouth (eWOM) plays an important role as a new marketing tool in many countries nowadays. eWOM has been used through social media such as Facebook, Instagram, etc. eWOM in social media allows a continuous connection to a broad audience. Line application is the latest social media introduced in 2011. This study thus explored factors impacting on the eWOM intention via Line application which is a famous social media used, especially in Thailand. The four factors (user preference, user similarity, user interaction and user concern for others) drawn from Consumer Behaviors theory and two factors (ease of use, and usefulness) drawn from Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory were used in this study. The samples of 196 respondents were collected by using convenience sampling method via Google form survey. Multiple regression with stepwise method was used to analyze the data. The results showed that user preference, Line ease of use and Line usefulness have positive relationship with eWOM, while user similarity, user interaction and user concern have no relationship with eWOM. For theoretical contribution, the study expanded the application of TAM to explore the changing consumer behaviors and eWOM. For managerial implication, this study could help marketer develop marketing strategies that allow businesses to build on communication platform.
