Abstract

This article reports on the bio-effects caused by electromagnetic fields on plants, a long-term concern. Specifically, the germination of beans under a 60 Hz alternating magnetic field was observed. Before the experiment, a dedicated set of Helmholtz coils was designed and constructed to serve as the source of a uniform magnetic field. Mung beans and soybeans were assessed in this work. Importantly, a retardation effect on germination was found, although beans could grow normally after the magnetic field was removed.
