Abstract

SummaryTwenty-six aliphatic alcohols containing from one to 11 carbon atoms were compared in their disinfecting action against nine representative strains of bacteria. Primary-normal-amyl alcohol was found to be the most effective disinfectant when tested by the agar cup plate method for testing antiseptics and disinfectants. There was a regulardecrease in germicidal action from the primary to iso- to secondary to tertiary arrangements of the carbon atom chain for any given number of carbon atoms.
