Abstract

AbstractIn April of 2002, the Federal Government of Germany outlined its “Strategy for Sustainable Development.” It includes 21 targets and indicators for sustainable development, and outlines perspectives for a 21st century Germany, that is sustainable into the future. The aim of this strategy is a careful balance between the needs of today's generation and the life perspectives of future generations. This paper presents the main thrusts behind Germany's plans to maintain that balance. Adapted from a press release issued announcing the strategy, it identifies seven “priority action” areas, where “changes of course” are needed to achieve a system of sustainable development. These focus points re p resent, in concrete form, principles of sustainable development relevant to actions of the Federal Government and other players.
