Abstract
Against the background of a brief historical overview of earlier roles played by nontechnical subjects in German engineering curricula, this paper considers the current aims of non-technical subjects in the promotion of social responsibility in engineering, especially in light of recent recommendations by a professional group on integrating transdisciplinary work into the academic study of engineering. The analysis is then related to the results of an empirical study of the status of nontechnical curricula in Germany. Finally, problems that impede curricular reform in regard to nontechnical subjects are identified.
