Abstract

The question of which German dictionary to choose has often puzzled students and teachers alike. Some professors may prefer seeing their students use a monolingual dictionary. With the Sprachbrockhaus and especially Gerhard Wahrig's Das Grof3e Deutsche W6rterbuch (see GQ, 1970, 91-94) there are two excellent books to choose from. Of course, these dictionaries are of little help when it comes to translating from English into German. And let us not deceive ourselves: students who were brought up on textbook vocabularies and were not shown how to use a monolingual German dictionary will most probably take refuge in one of those inexpensive but inadequate bilingual paperback editions. Therefore, a student should be taught to use a good bilingual dictionary early in his linguistic studies, and in subsequent courses he should be taught to use this same book more and more effectively.
