Abstract
Germ cell transplantation has many applications, including the production of live fish derived from cryopreserved germ cells, production of gametes of large-bodied species using small-bodied surrogate recipients, and production of genetically modified fish via transfected germ cells. Germ cell transplantation methods can be divided into the following: (1) transplantation of migrating primordial germ cells into blastula embryos, (2) transplantation of post-migratory primordial germ cells into the body cavity of hatchlings, (3) transplantation of germ-line stem cells into the body cavity of hatchlings, and (4) transplantation of spermatogonial stem cells into adult gonads. Here, the background, principles, and potential applications of these technologies are introduced.
