Abstract

This article provides a picture of the activities of Gerard van Thienen, who from 1968 until 2004 was attached to the Koninklijke Bibliotheek as curator of incunables. After a brief outline of his training, attention is paid to Van Thienen's contribution to the I973 commemorative exhibition De vijfhonderdste verjaring van de boekdrukkunst in de Nederlanden. Next, it is made clear that with his publications Incunabula in Dutch Libraries (I983) and Incunabula printed in the Low Countries (1999) he compiled standard works for the study of Dutch incunables. Van Thienen's role as curator is discussed in the appraisal of some spectacular acquisitions with which he was able to enrich the incunable collection of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. His contributions to the restoration and presentation of the incunables are also dealt with. The article concludes with an overview of Van Thienen's other publications.
